Updated June 22 - Added VB.NET version
In the better late than never category, I finally have a preview of the Blog Starter Kit to share with you. The current preview is not yet ready to deploy, but the core feature set is nearly complete, so it should give you a preview of what the starter kit looks like, and let you start playing with it.
To install the kit, just download and install the zip file into a directory, and open it in Visual Studio or Visual Web Developer Express. You'll also need SQL Server 2005 Express for the blog database.
It's still far from done, however - in the next preview release, I'm planning on adding the following features:
- AJAX support with Atlas
- Support for Atom publishing APIs, and integration with Word 2007
- An import/export feature
- Trackback support
- More themes, and enhanced theme support
- VS template (.vsi) support
- Plug-in model (so you can add your own features)
Please check it out and let me know what you think, any bugs you find, or any features you'd like to change or add!
Download the Blog Starter Kit preview in C# or VB.NET.

Hi
I have downloaded the stuff and it looks neat.
By When Can we expect the next version of the blog starter kit.
Would you be adding feature like Adding calender in the sidebar,or books, or other new stuff in the side bar.
Thanks

It is tragic that Microsoft developers continue to release apps in C# only, relegating VB to step child status, or wait TILL I have the time! You probably should have waited till you have both flavors ready. The truth is that, there are more VB developers out there than C# and MS was built and supported at the early days by VB developers. What I am saying is that, considering that MS has both VB and C# audience out there, it is unfair to target only C# for initial releases. Yes, I know I can learn C# , BUT what if I don't want to?
I have complained about this to Scott G and will continue to do so till apps are released in both languages at same time.
Yea, C# "may be" the new kid in town, but what if we all dumped our "seasoned" (no, they are not OLD!) wives for 19 year olds???
Imagine the chaos!

Hi,
I've got the blog running locally. I can add a comment OK and it shows up when you click the 'comments' link for the post. However, the link still says '0 comments' even though there is a comment.

You should go through your pages and turn ViewState off on controls that do not need it! :-)

That's very cool! Now have another kit put into my starter kit collection at http://www.edream.org/links.aspx

Thanks for providing this great starter kit. I got one up and running on the vs web server in about 2 minutes.

Vikram: I'll have another update in a couple of weeks. In terms of additional content in the sidebar: I'll be considering putting in database-backed content, but you can customize the sidebar with your own static content by editing the Sidebar.ascx file in Visual Studio, and adding your own content.
logic: Thanks for the great feedback. I was actually planning on having a VB.NET version out at the same time, but ended up having to work out a few last minute bugs. You can now get the VB.NET version from the updated link above.
D Halley: Thanks for the find - I'll fix it in the next verison.
Scott: Thanks for the feedback. I still haven't finished optimizing viewstate on all of the pages yet, but it's definitely in progress.

Okay, I ran it, and it ran pretty well. The setup was quite painless even. I wish it had referral information as well.
I don't see trackbacks either, but I don't really miss them either (#1 unstoppable source of spam).
Also, it would be incredibly nice to have an API so I could blog straight from MS-Word (am I asking for too much here?)
I am really anxious to move my blog to your engine. Please let me know if you need any simple coding horsepower, or simply testing, or any other way I can help in. I am anxious to start using this work of art :).

Sahil: Referral info and web services API are definitely both on the cards for the next release. Building a rich-text editor was, ahem, interesting (and there are still some bugs in it to be fixed), but I'm looking forward to being able to use Word 2007 to author my posts.

Hi
I liked Ur work as I said before and most probably use this as my blogging Engine. If you need any help in coding or testing, I am ready to help

I downloaded this tool, and it is a great start! Would you consider putting this up as a CodePlex project, so multiple developers can help?
I would love to help.

Because I am impatient, I ported my blog (local machine only), to your blog-engine.
ITS GOOD !!
I can't get the "Manage Feedback" working though.
Also, I sorely miss referral stats. I hope that's shortly on your TODO. :)

Sorry - Spoke 2 soon.
So feedback does work - Well Kinda !!
I noticed that default feedback was always published (maybe I missed something?), but unpublished only feedback shows up. Also, if there is no unpublished feedback - it shows up as "blank page" - a better message would be nicer. Also it would be nice to be able to tweak "Already published feedback". Already published stuff seems to be a one way street :) (though this is certainly a nice to have rather than a must have).
I must complement you for your fantastic work on the database side - extremely ingenious.

Sorry for the way too many comments :). I'm just really excited about your blog engine.
I figured out the "Feedback is auto-approved" issue. Because I was authenticated, my feedback was auto-approved.
That's a good idea - huge timesaver.
I must say - "Good Work" (like I'm qualified to complement "The Shanku" anyway) :).
I can't wait to see better referral support.

Couple of bug reports -
Feedback count doesn't show up on home page. It keeps saying "0 comments".
Feedback's are sorted in descending order, should be ASC

I use MsSqlServer 2005 and I have problems to use the database. I want to attach the data base to the MsSqlServer 2005, but I think the .mdf has an internal reference to a .log file in other folder !? and I get a error and I can't use the database.

Hi
I am a newvy into asp.net and web development at all.
Anyway, I love to learn :)
Will the blog also support crossgroup posting based on tags/categories?
Will you allow to fetch external feeds into the admin panel for being modified (such as msn search feeds,...?) and then added to the blog as item?
Also: Can I use the blog as something like a "blog portal" and allow some friends to maintain specifc areasy of the blog = be responsible for speicifc categories while another is monitoring some other categories?
Would be cool :)

On the Post.aspx page there is a link to a non-existant page for viewing posts in the same category of the selected post.
"Category.aspx?categoryID={0}"
Should be
"default.aspx?categoryID={0}"

In the posted code the post editor's font selections do not work. This is due to an error in the javascript used in the "onChange" handler for each of the select objects. The javscript is calling the "ExecRichEdit" function with the font name (or size) parameter out of order, it is being sent to the function in the "showUI" parameter rather than the "param" parameter.

I've always been interested in programming, but math isn't my best subject. However I'm still willing to take a crack at it considering I need more career options.
